I had the opportunity over the weekend to spend the whole day with the camera on personal work and wow did I enjoy it. It’s been a waaaaay too long since I’ve had the chance to wander around with nothing to do but take pictures. While my main purpose was to capture some of the amazing Autumnal colour that we have right now, there was something else I wanted to do – abstracts. I’ve been promising myself for a while now to produce something shall we say… less photographic! While I have experimented over the last year I have never produced something I was happy with; until Saturday that is.
With tripod, camera and some ND Filters in hand I spent my time wandering along a river bank in the Vale of Clara in Wicklow. It was a fasting moving body of water after the heavy rains during the week and I was seeking some interesting patterns created by the ebb and flow of the water. I came across this series of submerged rocks which was creating some turbulence in the flow. Experimenting with different exposure times I settled on 1 second as it created wonderful tracery patterns on the left side as the river flowed toward the rocks and much more defined and visceral patterns as the river flowed over the rocks on the right; however 1 sec was just long enough to leave the structure of the river bed intact. This image was made up of two separate frames stitched together.
