I had really hoped to shoot this sunrise on Jan 1st but unfortunately the weather here in Ireland was just too bad. Never the less I faced the freezing conditions on Sunday 3rd and hit the road at 6am geared up with winter clothes, flask of coffee and a hip flask for a nip of whiskey when it got really cold 🙂
I arrived at Blessington around 08:00 so lot’s of time to set-up as Sunrise was not due to 08:40. The weather was not playing nice on the day and there was a heavy bank of cloud covering the sunrise, which in fact did not peak above them until after 10am.
However as I looked around I saw that to the left of the rising sun some lovely colours were appearing in the clouds above the mountains. These colours were also being reflected in the water, and the snow covered branch from a tree just sticking out of the water set the scene off nicely I think.
There was a brisk breeze moving the clouds at a nice pace so I thought a long exposure shot would work well. I added 5 stops worth of ND Filters + a CPL and set the ISO down to 50 and aperture to f/20. I’m never really comfortable shooting at such an aperture with my 17-40 as it tends to get a little soft above f/16 but I do seem to get away with it for these extended exposures. With all that set-up I shot a 40sec exposure which provides some nice movement in the clouds plus a silky calm lake.
