“In art and dream may you proceed with abandon. In life may you proceed with balance and stealth.” ~ Patti Smith
We are having some crazy weather here in Ireland over the last couple of weeks. After our unexpected but welcome heatwave we are now having Thunderstorms. Although as a photographer this kind of extreme weather is very welcome, it has lead to some wonderful light.
I witnessed one of these Thunderstorms while standing on the old peer in Blackrock, watching as it broke across the bay over Poolbeg Generating Station. The thunderclaps peeled and reverberated across the sky, yet only a few drops of rain hit my face. These weather fronts are very localised. As it broke I wandered along the beach looking for possible compositions. Lets face it it does not come much more iconic in Dublin then the Poolbeg Chimney Stacks and they have been well photographed.

The tide was receding and leaving large expanses of shallow pools across the beach, and with the thunderstorm now over everywhere was perfectly still. I found an outcropping of rocks in front of a large shallow pool and thought this might be perfect… and it was. Using the small moss covered rock as an anchor to draw the eye, the Poolbeg Chimney Stacks and their reflections which were naturally highlighted by some low lying clouds to bring you further into the image, the Poolbeg Lighthouse on the far left to stop your eyes from straying out of the frame; this image is all about the tranquility and stillness of the clouds and their reflection.
