At the end of October I shared with you an image that was somewhat of a departure from what you may have become used too seeing from me. In that Water Abstract post I spoke about a desire to pursue something less photographic, although still using my camera. The image was admittedly a tentative step into the abstract in as much as I think the subject was still relatively obvious as some rocks in fast moving water. Today I wanted to share how I am progressing in my pursuit of a photograph as an ‘impression’ of a time and place rather then ‘record’.
My objective from the very beginnings of my photographic journey has always been to share more then a visual record of a place I have visited but to also impart the emotion I felt at the time. Whether that emotion was exultation as the sun rises above the horizon and bathes to world in beautiful soft golden light; or the quiet peacefulness of sitting beside a lake watching the sun retreat for another day or the exhilaration of standing at the edge of cliff being buffeted by high winds and rain. This step into the Abstract me in that pursuit I think by removing the ‘record’ part of image taking I am freed to focus solely on the ‘impression’. I’ve a number of other pieces in the works and will share them over the next week or two. Oh and don’t worry I will continue to produce images that are both ‘record’ and ’emotion’.
